Editor’s Note: Watkins called NRS back after this article was published to say that he misspoke and meant that Missouri State, not Missouri, was recruiting him the hardest.
Class of 2013 point guard Dayshawn Watkins hasn’t even played in a major AAU event with the Arkansas Wings Elite yet, but he already has drawn attention and offers from several SEC and Big 12 schools.
“I have offers from Louisiana Tech, Missouri State, Ole Miss, Tulsa, Eastern Michigan and Arkansas-Little Rock,” Watkins told NRS. “Other schools that have shown interest in me are Missouri, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, North Carolina State and some others.”
Watkins will also be playing in front of dozens of college coaches in the next couple of weeks as the Nike EYBL kicks off so his offer list will likely increase.
However, of the schools who are currently recruiting him, the 5’10, 165-pound floor general is able to identify some favorites in different categories.
“Arkansas is my favorite coaching staff,” Watkins said. “They do a good job with their point guards and let them play. They play good defense and are up-tempo. Also, Missouri State, VCU and Wichita State are recruiting me the hardest.”
Arkansas also has a big of an advantage since Watkins grew up a Razorback fan. “I liked Arkansas growing up but I haven’t liked them in a while,” Watkins said. “[Although] it does impact my recruitment.”
With all of these programs chasing after him, it’s important that he knows what he’s looking for in a school.
“I like an up-tempo style, that’s my game,” he said. “I want to come in and play and be effective right away.”
The Arkansas native doesn’t have any visits currently planned but has taken trips to Ole Miss, Arkansas and Missouri State. He has no timetable for a commitment but does plan on sitting down August 1 with his family to figure out his recruitment and put together a list.
