“Baylor had been recruiting him since he’s been in the 7th and 8th grade,” Gathers’ brother, Greg, told ESPN.com, “and there’s a connection with ‘Tweety’ Carter going up there and it’s a situation where they have Isaiah Austin, L.J. Rose and they already have Gary Franklin that he’s familiar with.”
The Louisiana-native is a terrific fit for Baylor because he’s a double-double machine who can get it done on both ends of the court. He was second in scoring during the Nike EYBL last summer averaging over 20 points a game while leading the EYBL in rebounding with about 12 a contest. He also recorded 20.7 ppg, 16.2 rpg, 3.9 blocks and 2.3 assists as a junior en route to winning the 2011 Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year award.
With the new addition of Gathers, Baylor has a top-five recruiting class featuring two of the best big men in the country. Austin and Gathers will be able to step in for the Bears and contribute right away. Here’s an excerpt of our evaluation for the 6’7, 235-pound power forward:
Gathers is one of the most powerful players in the class of 2012 regardless of position and has good athleticism for a power forward. He is a rebounding machine who is very tough and a big man who can run the floor. He is also an extremely good finisher and is very quick for his size. However, he can work to develop a better perimeter jump shot to add to his offensive arsenal.
Here’s a clip that shows three of his dunks in a recent game of his:
