Poythress trims list to five, talks about each school

After his Kentucky visit Saturday it was clear the Wildcats had a great chance to land on class of 2012 small forward Alex Poythress’ (#25) list, but what wasn’t clear was who else would make it.

Poythress told NRS today that he cut his list to Kentucky, Duke, Vanderbilt, Memphis and Florida. “Those are the five schools I’m most comfortable with,” Poythress said, “just talking with them I’m comfortable.” When asked which coaching staff and playing system he likes the best, Poythress named Kentucky but insisted later that he has no favorites. However, he did talk more about why he likes the Wildcats and the other four schools on his list.

“With Kentucky, I like their great coaches and the fact that they’re a basketball school,” Poythress said. “They also have good player development.” Poythress also told us Saturday that his visit to Lexington was his favorite visit so far and that he really likes how the womens’ volleyball team is recruiting his sister as well.

Regarding Vanderbilt, he cited their long-time interest in him among other things that landed the Commodores on his list. “They’ve been recruiting me the longest,” Poythress says, “and I have a good relationship with their coaching staff and they have good academics.” He has told us previously that the biggest thing Vanderbilt is emphasizing to him is the fact that they need wings.

He mentioned superb academics when talking about Duke too when explaining why they made his list. Says Poythress, “They have good academics and are a good basketball school.” He also says that the potential recruiting violation by the Blue Devils and the aftermath (that included criticism from former Duke star Nolan Smith) has not affected his perception towards them.

When discussing the last two schools on his list — Florida and Memphis — playing style for both schools was a leading factor for their inclusion. “Florida has great coaches and I like how they use their wings,” Poythress said. “Memphis is a basketball city and I like their offense.”

Although he has a good feel for each of these five schools on his list, he does not have a timetable for his official visits or his commitment date. Says Poythress, “I’m just looking for the best fit for me.”
