ESPN RISE NHSI Championship Notes

As Oak Hill (VA) and Montrose Christian battled for the ESPN RISE National High School Invitational (NHSI) championship yesterday, several players did things worth noting. See below for our notes from the memorable championship game and go to the game recaps section to see how Montrose Christian defeated Oak Hill in a double-overtime thriller.

  • Maryland-commit Justin Anderson used his physical abilities to his advantage by coming up with impressive blocks and pulling down rebounds against much taller opponents. He also showed his versatility by hitting multiple three-pointers and did a good job of anticipating passes which paid off in the form of multiple steals.
  • Junior Michael Carrera continued his high-energy play as he constantly crashed the boards and was active in the lane. He also finished well through contact consistently.
  • Villanova-commit Tyrone Johnson displayed nice court vision and passing skills when he threw two ¾ court-pass that ended. He also did a great job on offense in the first half despite not scoring a point by making good passes and good decisions.
  • Jordan Adams continued to impress by hitting a step-back jumper at the top of the key, then a three in transition, and then another mid-range jumper.
  • McDonald’s All-American and Duke-commit Quinn Cook showed poor shot-selection many times with long threes early in the shot-clock but did a great job of penetrating the lane and kicking out to open shooters.
  • Denmark native Kevin Larsen silently played an important role in forcing the first overtime when he scored four points on back-to-back possessions for Montrose Christian on a lay-up and hook shot.
  • Oak Hill junior Damien Wilson is someone who you should keep an eye out for next year.
