McDonald’s All-Americans Announced

Austin Rivers (Duke), Michael Gilchrist (Kentucky), and Marquis Teague (Kentucky) headlined the McDonald’s All-American Game rosters which were announced today at 5:00 pm on ESPNU. The West squad’s lineup features Rivers, Teague, Myck Kabongo (Texas), Wayne Blackshear (Louisville), and Branden Dawson (Michigan State) in the back court with Chane Behanan (Louisville), Rakeem Christmas (Syracuse), Gilchrist (Kentucky), James McAdoo (North Carolina), Johnny O’Bryant (LSU), and Marshall Plumlee (Duke) in the front court. On the East squad, Brad Beal (Florida), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (Georgia), Michael Carter-Williams (Syracuse), Quinn Cook (Duke), P.J. Hairston (North Carolina), and Shannon Scott (Ohio State) will be in the backcourt with Khem Birch (Pittsburgh), Anthony Davis (Kentucky), LeBryan Nash (Oklahoma State), Adonis Thomas (Memphis), Amir Williams (Ohio State), Kyle Wiltjer (Kentucky), and Cody Zeller (Indiana) in the front court. Kentucky leads for the most players in this game with four recruits (Gilchrist, Teague, Davis, and Wiltjer) and Duke is close behind with three(Rivers, Cook, and Plumlee). Syracuse (Christmas and Carter-Williams), North Carolina (McAdoo and Hairston), Louisville (Behanan and Blackshear), and Ohio State (Williams and Scott) all have two players in the game as well. There were only two real snubs in my opinion between Josiah Turner (Arizona) and Tony Wroten Jr. (Washington) not making it. Also, I’m surprised Plumlee made it but there is not a lot of depth for big men in this class so it’s understandable.

An interesting fact about this game is that no team has won a National Championship without a McDonald’s All-American since 1978 (the year it started)except for Maryland in 2002. Also, this is the just the second time North Carolina hasn’t had three All-Americans in the game (the other was 2007 when they had zero) in the past seven years*. Duke also extended their streak to seven straight years with a player in the game and Texas has had a McDonald’s All-American in six of the last seven years. John Calipari has had a player in the game each of the last five years as well. The game will be played on March 30 on ESPN at 10:00 pm (EST).

*Rosters of McDonald’s All-American games are not available from more than seven years ago (2005).
