After former Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel decided to become an assistant coach at Duke, it was widely known that Capel would try to use the relationship that he built with class of 2012 power forward Perry Ellis (#10) during his time with the Sooners, to recruit him for the Blue Devils. However, what wasn’t known was whether Ellis would be interested in adding the 2010 National Champions to his list.
Many speculated that it would be difficult for Duke to jump on Ellis late since he likes the comfort level of having known coaches for multiple years, but we got a chance to talk to Ellis’ mother, Fonda Ellis, and it seems that Perry may be more interested in Duke than previously thought.
“Duke is showing great interest right now,” Fonda Ellis said. “If Duke keeps showing interest they will [be added to his list].” Fonda added, “Perry really likes Capel a lot [because] they have been close for three years. [As for] head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Perry thinks [he] is cool and thinks it is an honor to have him call him and just talk.”
Fonda also went on to talk about how Duke sees Perry fitting into their system. “Coach K told Perry that when he watches his video highlights it reminded him of [former Duke star] Grant Hill… I think Perry would fit great.” Capel was also said to have spoken with Perry several times since he arrived at Duke and that Ellis has been in contact with Krzyzewski twice in addition to Capel e-mailing the entire Ellis family often throughout the past month.
As for a timetable, Fonda had this to say. “He wants to wait after the summer and then pick five schools for officials visits early fall. He [also] wants to take a visit [to Duke].” Perry currently has a list of six schools that includes Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Memphis, Oklahoma and Wichita State, but as we have reported, it seems that Oklahoma is in the back of the pack and that Kansas and Kentucky may be in his top three. A different source has also said that staying in Wichita is certainly a possibility for the top ten prospect and that Minnesota has been in recent contact.
